The Metaverse is the bridge between human imagination and actual technological parameters. Currently VR, AR, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the Internet of Things are all associated with the Metaverse. There are a lot of programs, virtual content, blockchain network, and artificial intelligence technology in the Metaverse. Is this where Edge computing could succeed?

By 2025, according to Gartner’s research report, 75% of all enterprise data will be processed by edge technology. It is apparent that there is a huge market behind edge computing. So, what is the connection between edge computing and the development of the Metaverse? What will the future be like? This article will explain the profound things in simple language and elaborate on the understanding and thinking of Caduceus edge computing technology.

The scene sequence and corresponding features of current Metaverse users can be divided into the following five aspects:

1. Access to Metaverse, emphasizing immersive experience using XR and digital twin technologies.

2. Re-interaction, emphasizing high simulation interactions which include 3D engine, real-time rendering, digital twin and other technologies.

3. Simultaneous use of digital content which requires the creation of virtual items/space.

4. Rules and identities, the basis for supporting mutual identification and interaction between different users and entities in the virtual world, based on blockchain technology;

5. Large scale numbers of online users to ensure the continuous operation and real-time feedback of the virtual world.

For now, front end technical support such as real-time rendering, edge nodes, distributed network bandwidth and computing resources play an important role in the development of the Metaverse. We call it the technological system that underpins the development of the Metaverse.

The modeling and display of buildings in the Metaverse require a lot of computing power for rendering, and all other actions also require powerful computing power. Therefore, higher computing power can build a Metaverse with a stronger sense of experience. Every major leap in the game industry stems from the update and progress of computing power and video processing technology, and the same is applied for the Metaverse.

The Metaverse is built on the infrastructure of the data center, and after all this technology requires access to hardware equipment, computing facilities, high bandwidth, low latency networks, and a series of engines and modeling tools. Investments in data centers will benefit from the decentralization, spatial computing and new digital experience demands of the Metaverse, especially for GPUs and DPUs.

Edge computing is a new form of distributed computing, based on the core technology of cloud computing and built on edge infrastructure. It provides computing capabilities at the edge end users. It is an on-site decentralized cloud computing data source.

In traditional computing, users have one own single IT resource, where cloud computing seems to build a large ‘IT resource pool’, which is output to all users and they can choose the corresponding IT resources according to their requirements. If the user needs more computing power or storage, and if the local machine cannot meet it, “foreign assistance” from the cloud can be obtained. If one cloud GPU is not enough, then more can be added.

Although cloud computing with its powerful data center provides computing power pools with flexible scalable computing services for business applications, can in theory bear the huge computing and storage requirements generated by the Metaverse, its shortcomings are also apparent. Fundamentally, for cloud computing there is a large amount of data that requires processing, and it causes significant delays. Especially when the data throughput is too large, this kind of delay is more serious.

Edge computing can effectively solve these problems. Edge computing can process data locally or in a closest edge data center. Since the information it collects does not have to be transmitted to traditional cloud facilities, it can greatly improve the response speed on smart devices. As an extension of cloud computing, edge computing proposes the possibility of larger bandwidth, lower latency, and wider coverage. Compared with cloud computing, Caduceus uses edge computing technology to focus on real time, short cycle data, local decision making and other business scenarios.

The application of Caduceus edge computing technology will do more to protect the privacy of users. Compared to the traditional Internet, the Metaverse will collect even more user data than ever before, posing increasingly severe privacy risks. The majority of current cloud services are controlled by a select few Tech giants, who historically, do not conceal their efforts to track and harvest user information. The natural progression of this means that while users are browsing the Metaverse, all their data, movement trajectories, and even other personal information has the potential to be tracked and harvested by these well known giants.

Edge computing allows data to be processed and stored on edge devices, which can provide better protection for user privacy. On one hand, edge services can not only remove highly private data from applications during the authorization process to protect user privacy. On the other hand, edge platforms can also more easily use algorithms such as “Federated Learning” that can protect user’s privacy. This is a machine learning algorithm that is different from traditional centralized machine learning. After adopting this algorithm, machine learning can no longer disturb user’s privacy.

Edge computing can properly solve the issues of central traffic congestion and lack of computing resources caused by the rapid growth of intelligent terminals and is an important path to solve future digital problems. The Metaverse needs edge computing to process optimization and high quality interactive experience which requires edge computing power as the underlying foundation. It is evident that edge computing is an important support for the realization of the Metaverse.
